EQUIPPING FOR EDUCATIONAL MINISTRIES

The United Faculty of Theology is offering a variety of courses to equip graduates for educational ministries, and for the continuing professional development of chaplains and Religious Education teachers.

These courses are for accredited awards of the Melbourne College of Divinity taught within the United Faculty of Theology. All courses are for graduates: some require a degree in theology, other may be taken by those with degrees in other disciplines. None of these options provide basic teacher training or registration.

For those seeking to train in educational chaplaincy, whether for school chaplaincy or other educational settings, we offer two specialist qualifications: a Graduate Certificate in Educational Chaplaincy (1 semester full time equivalent) and a Graduate Diploma in Educational Chaplaincy (2 semester full time equivalent). In addition, the units offered in these courses may be used towards other degrees such as the Master of Divinity, the Master of Theological Studies, and the Ministry Studies program, as well as the general entry Graduate Diploma in Theology.

Courses for graduates in theology:

· Graduate Certificate in Educational Chaplaincy

· Graduate Diploma in Educational Chaplaincy

· Master of Theological Studies

Courses for graduates in any discipline:

· Graduate Diploma in Theology (general)

· Graduate Certificate in Teaching Religious Education

· Master of Divinity

Cost: $936 per unit (2008 fee rate) Australian citizens and permanent residents are eligible for FEE-Help

Educational Chaplaincy Specialisation

Entry requirement: a recognized degree in theology, or a Graduate Diploma in Theology (general) or an equivalent qualification.

General Shape: The core of required units in this specialization are made up of four distinctive units. The first three make up the Graduate Certificate in Educational Chaplaincy. The further study required for the Graduate Diploma would add a practicum unit, and two optional units which could be taken from any accredited graduate level unit within the MCD; units in the fields of Biblical Studies, Spirituality, Ethics, World Religions, Pastoral Theology, Missiology, and Pastoral Care (or indeed other units in religious education) would be particularly appropriate.

Graduate Certificate in Educational Chaplaincy

Three required units (15 points each):

o Principles of Religious Education

o Ministry in an Educational Setting

o Worship in an Educational Setting

Graduate Diploma in Educational Chaplaincy

Four required units (15 points each):

o Principles of Religious Education

o Ministry in an Educational Setting

o Worship in an Educational Setting

o Practicum

Two optional units: Any approved graduate unit.

Students would be able to undertake further study in Biblical Studies, Spirituality, Ethics, World Religions, Pastoral Theology, Missiology, and Pastoral Care. Other units in religious education not previously undertaken (such as DRE 325.15 Educating and Ministering in the Life Passages) could also be undertaken here.

Graduate Diploma in Theology

This is a general introduction to theological study for those who have no prior background in theology, pitched at graduate level. It is a course of 6 units: the equivalent of one year’s full time study. Students must complete at least 3 foundational units in at least 3 disciplines (Old Testament, New Testament, Church History, Systematic Theology, Christian Ministry), and also up to three other graduate units. The units in the educational chaplaincy stream may be used for this purpose, making the Grad.Dip.Theol a useful course for those without a theology degree who wish to undertake specialist training in educational chaplaincy. It could also be used as an entry requirement for the specialised Graduate Diploma in Educational Chaplaincy.

Graduate Certificate in Teaching Religious Education.

Graduate students who have completed one unit in both biblical studies and systematic theology may enroll for this award. It comprises

· DRE 346.15 Principles of Religious Education

· a graduate unit germane to the teaching of units such as Texts & Traditions or Religion and Society (For example a unit in World Religions or Religious Studies or Ethics or Biblical Studies)

· Ministry in an Educational Setting [unit proposed to be offered in Educational Chaplaincy specialization.] or another graduate unit as described in previous item.

Students without the prerequisites in biblical studies and systematic theology may enroll for a Graduate Certificate in Theology, and undertake DRE 346.15 Principles of Religious Education, together with a unit in biblical studies and systematic theology to complete the award.

UFT Plants Feet

On Wednesday 28 May, during National Reconciliation Week, a group of UFT faculty and students gathered together to commemorate Sorry Day. The theme for this year was Stolen Generations Track Home. In the context of a short liturgy led by Dr Robin Koning sj those present planted symbolic feet in the garden outside the CTM building. The brightly coloured feet represent the next steps on the journey towards reconciliation, a journey to which the UFT is committed.
